...Again... I must say that I hate politics. ::shakes her head::
WARNING! LONG BORING COMPLAINT ABOUT POLITICS AHEAD!
I had to leave the upstairs because people were talking about politics, and how their parents are being brainwashed by the media... you know... I find it amusing how they consider their parents to be ignorant, but if I suggest the same of them, they don't seem to get that it's the same sort of thing.
And they're still talking about propaganda, and I can hear them from here... >.> with such avidly political parents, you'd think I'd be more into it. By avidly political, I mean that they read most everything they can about government issues, and then take strong sides based on who they think best supports their views on said issues. And... ideally, that's how people ought to make their political choices. But there's so much bias out there for both of the major sides that it's difficult to pick one without being heavily influenced by the media bias.
Of course, that doesn't just hold true for politics. It's far more universal. But, that's the major issue on my mind right now... 'cause I can *still* hear them talking.
Father's a libertarian and Mother's a socialist. Who knew? Living with them for my life, their views are bound to have influenced mine... And it's true... Though I am much closer to Father's views than Mother's, it seems.
But, living with them and their strong views has turned me off to politics... (in addition to other reasons I mentioned in a previous post) They discuss how manipulative the major political influences are, and how gullible people are to propaganda.... but they're just as likely to be influenced. I mean... they know what the media and campaigners are doing... so there's some defense there. But can't the same be said of most of educated America? And yet, they're still influenced.
As for me... I'm probably influenced, too. After all, it's hard to avoid. But I've become sick of being politically involved... without ever even having *been* politically involved. My family did enough of that for me. But now, I think they decided they were sick of it, too... but they aren't really. They just said they were. If they really were, they'd stop talking about it constantly. So instead of being constructive with their political angst with local politics as before, now they just fester and complain like the rest of America.
It seems I'm complaining too much for me to be able to hold myself to the same standard I'm holding them to. So maybe I do care. I just don't want to admit it. Except that I'm against getting involved. So maybe that's the difference. And maybe they are sick of being involved, but are too used to paying attention. And that explains their constant discussion of politics.
Now on the issue of political efficacy, I have lost all sense of it involving presidential elections. Why? First, the electoral college system is silly. Especially in states where there are few dissident opinions on the dominant party. (In states where this is borderline, this is less true... but I don't think I've ever lived in such a state.) In other words... if you're with the state's dominant party, your vote doesn't really matter... enough people voted otherwise that the electoral college would have gone to them even without you. If you're against the dominant party, well... you're gonna lose anyway, so why bother? And the election of 2000 didn't help either. It just proved that government is corrupt enough that even when a few people *could* change the way things go, they aren't allowed to, because it would be improper to leave the government in the hands of a few people who might not even know what's best for the country. Yes... I am of the opinion that Gore technically won the election. No, I'm not just saying that because I don't like Bush. Nor am I saying that because all the area newspapers in Minnesota said so. I'm saying it because more people voted for Gore than Bush. But our country doesn't work that way. No... it has to use the silly electoral college system.
However... after listening to their discussion, I have come to a conclusion... their definition of "democrat" or "republican" is one who votes down party lines unless they are majorly persuaded otherwise. So... again... statistically, most of America. And from that I conclude that their party-bashing isn't as silly and hypocritical as it could be.
Bah... my head hurts... maybe I should read a few supreme court cases...
