I am reminded of a story...
...one that I started several years ago, and never really got past the first few chapters describing the premise.
The main character had not even developed her unusual defining characteristic. Something all the women in her family eventually had to deal with. All that she had was the knowledge that keeping a journal would help her discern her emotions from others when the flood finally hit her. That, and a passion for mathematics spawned by the naive belief that eventually she would be able to use it to explain everything in the world.
In an effort to protect her from the world's confusion, her parents had insisted on home-schooling her. But her idealism and identification with fairy tales inspired her to leave home before she hit puberty. And so her family's efforts to protect her from being overwhelmed when she suddenly discovered the ability to vividly feel the emotions of those around her were undermined.
At this point I hadn't decided what exactly would happen to her. But perhaps I should think about it now. It's rather intriguing.
